Do not keep them.

Do not keep them.
Nowadays it has come to my notice that very many web sites have resulted to portraying themselves like TV networks. They have started putting sound and top-notch graphics onto their web page. What these companies are mistaking is that their site visitors are interested in watching TV. Although this would work fine for those having high speed internet connections which are broadband. The fact is, most visitors are viewing ones web site on a screen having a width of between 15 and 19 inches, and they can only see 216 colors, and also can only download at 28.8 kbps
What all this means:-
One as a web site designer, owner, CEO, or any one having some control over a web site should be able to follow a simple rule. Now, here is the rule one should follow: one should ensure he is on a 28.8 connection; then he should type in the URL for his web page; he should hit enter, and then hold his breath. If one needs to gasp for air as he waits for the page to be fully down loaded then he really needs to cut down on the size of the page. Though I am sure some people can hold their breath for a longer time. So, I am going to give a suggestion which is: ones page should not be larger than 50k. Personally, I would go for one which is less than 30k. The home page of the site that is visited most is under 21k. This is right; the home page of Yahoo is only 20k. To some people this size might seem very little but one can really do a lot just within this size.
How to get it smaller:-
First, one should ensure that his graphics are reduced to a small size as possible. One should try as much as he can to get them smaller than 4k. Even though going up to 6k is also considered reasonable. When one is designing a graphic for the web site one should keep in mind the number of colors in use. I do understand how hard this is, because myself as a graphic designer, I had difficulties going from millions of colors to 216. It is true that 216 is the number of colors one has on a color pallet that is web safe. Solid colors should be used when one is designing his image. Recently PhotoShop has really popularized the gradient. It is visually appealing to fade things in and out of the page. I do always see a background border being made up of this gradient. Always I do right click on that particular image to see the size. I can tell you that the 8k-12k is not worth the space. The gradient has a problem in that it uses dithering and many colors. Both these features take up big time K. It is obvious that the more color you have in an image the bigger it will be in the long run.
One should use less of graphics and more of design. A web page needs to look good and down load quickly for it to be successful. This is the dilemma, look good or download quick? One should try using color schemes instead of taking pictures then turning them in to jpgs and designing graphics to make his web page look good. One should use cell colors to make boarders. He should use the negative space on his web site. What is lacking has an equal importance to what is not lacking. One should bear in mind that sometimes less is more. When one is in doubt he should think of a typical visitor coming to his web page. Would a site having that extra graphic sell them or make them come back again and again? One should by all means keep it if the answer is yes. But if not then, one can decide to do without it. It is a fact that site visitors do not like being kept for long. The purpose of the web is to make our life easier and not to keep one in front of a screen waiting for the web pages to down load.
