If a degree normally takes four years of full-time study, for instance be leery of schools claiming you can earn it in a shorter time unless you have already earned a two-year degree or accumulated lots of undergraduate credits.

No Real Campus – If you can’t identify a genuine campus location, probe further. If an address consists of a post office box number or an office suite, it could be the location from which a diploma mill operates.

Knock-off Names – Some schools sound like reputable colleges or universities, but when you look carefully, the name is actually a variation. If you have doubts based on a school’s name, check its information against that of schools with similar names.

An emphasis on “real-world” experience – While some colleges offer students the chance to gain credit for work experience, such options are normally a limited part of an overall program. Too much focus on equating experience to college credits can be a warning sign.

If you don’t have a specific school in mind, an Internet search will provide links to a variety of school websites and programs. Simply using a search term such as “online courses” or “online degree programs” will help you get started. Since geography is not a consideration, an initial search will bring results that may be of interest even though the school involved is a long distance from your home, as well as programs in your own state or region.
