Designing a searchable web site

Every website owner wants the same thing, to have their website appear as the first result in the search engines. Having an search engine friendly website will increase your sales, your visitors and of course your reputation.

A designer should keep that in mind when he or she are about to design a site. It’s not just about graphics and images. Websites of course have texts and titles and headlines. One good advice to keep in mind is that whatever can be written should be written, and by that we mean that no images with text should be used. Headers are really important when it comes to search engines as they are one of the first things that the engines read. Having an image, might make the site  lose potential visitors.

Designers should keep a balance between the use of graphics and text. Of course images can and should be optimized for web, with having appropriate alternative text inside the code. That way, even images can be read.

However, when it comes to flash, things can be a bit tricky. It was a problem a while ago, since flash cannot be read by the engines so all the websites that were made completely with flash or elements within the website, like banners or menus, couldn’t be “understood” by the search engines. Nevertheless, recently that has changed and developers can now insert alternate text inside the code so the engines can finally read it. However, many are still a bit skeptic, since flash can also lead to increased loading times and it also requires certain plug in to be viewed by browsers. But it’s also a fact that  flash designers can create wonderful graphics and mini applications with fancy graphics that can be both pleasant to the eye and functional.

But, no matter how the designer creates the graphics of the website, he or she should always have in mind about search engine optimization and how important it is for the well being of the site. Avoid overusing graphics, just for the sake of design, and always keep a balance between your text and graphics. And no matter how you create your graphics always use alternative text.
