Designing For Multiple Screen Resolutions
The fast expanding information technology witnesses fresh inventions in both hard ware and software fields almost every day. While there were standard screen resolutions initially, recent trends have seen a very high scale of diversity. Manufacturers are responding to certain specific needs of users hence the increasing disparity in screen resolutions.
The web designer will do well to give every a user a good view of a web site irrespective of the screen resolution of the monitor from which they are working. Since it is not possible to make browser pages that subscribe to every individual screen resolution type, it is important to create a browser page that is adaptable to whatever screen resolution that would be in use.
Web designers need to be aware that most users are currently operating with screen resolutions of 1024 by 768. The trend looks headed for higher resolutions as opposed to a drop in the figures. It is important that designers keep such information in mind when creating sites for different clients.
Setting a lower screen resolution is the easier part as a starting point. The 800 by 600 screen resolution is the most realistic point to keep in mind. Although the number of users working on such screens is lower, one should cater for this minority. By using this as a base; one will have covered whatever monitors operating on or above this screen resolution.
Once the lower point has been decided, one can proceed to create a site at this resolution. All the features will be viewed optimally in such an environment. Images can subsequently be exported in a format that would be appropriate for this resolution. This should be followed by the conversion of the design into HTML.
The mode of conversion should be based on percentages as opposed to pixels. Percentages provide a relative measurement to the tables involved. This enables all screen resolutions to be catered for. Using pixels is counter productive as it will only see one creating an absolute measurement. Such a feature will lock out all but one screen resolution in which the site is designed.
Designing a site for a specific screen implies that all tables are configured to that scale. Therefore for an 800 by 600 screen resolution one only requires tables that are configured to the 800 by 600 table. When the site is opened in a screen resolution that is higher, all tables will be confined to the original figure. This will see many of the features, text and images giving a display that is unbalanced. Their appearance may also have high color and tone clashes that will make it difficult to look at.
If the designer uses a resolution of 100% for height and width, this gives room for flexibility. Therefore any screen resolution on which the site will be opened will have all the features scaled to fit on that web page. The web page will have a 100% appearance. Although the general measurements should be done in terms of percentages, this should not apply intra table measurements. All the cells in the table must be measured in pixels except for cells that are used to carry content. Such a cell could even be left undefined for purposes of flexibility.
