Designing Call to Action Buttons – Here’s How

Call to action buttons is present in virtually any website. And your site must have them too particularly if you want to sell something or you want your visitors to download something from your site. If you want to design your own website, you have to make sure that the call to action buttons you’ll make are interesting enough to invite your visitors to click on them when they arrive at your page. Usually, call to action buttons has a link to signup, download, or sale.

Your goal as a designer is to ensure that your site visitors notice the call to action button in not more than 3 seconds. So you have to make it noticeable, colorful, and obvious.

Before you start designing, you must first be familiar with the five characteristics of call to action buttons.

  1. Color

The color of the call to action button should be attractive enough and should stand out to be easily noticed. Bright, contrasting colors are usually used when designing them.

  2. Language

You communicate to your visitor through your site and your call to action button says a lot. It usually initiates a new process so the language you must use is very necessary. It must be short and direct to the point. Clickable buttons so often start with an action verb such as click here, download, signup, buy now, and many more.

  3. Location

You must put the call to action buttons on the place where users could see them easily. They should always be obvious and easy to find. Among the ideal locations are in the header, beside the product, and above the fold

  4. Size

Users will click on it if it is obvious enough. So make it bigger to give users large area to click on. Making it large will also ensures that it will not be swallowed by other elements and that it is not missed by your site’s visitors.

  5. More Room

Give your button enough margins to make it more distinguishable and make sure the text has enough padding so visitors can read it easily.

Just put it this way: the call to action button in your site is the banana, and your visitor is the monkey. Following the basics in designing call to action buttons will make sure that the monkey gets the banana and click it before they leave.
