The Delights And Horrors Of Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing seems to be a magic word in the online world nowadays. This is partly because it holds so many promises to both the merchants and the online publishers or affiliates involved in this kind of business. But is there really a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow? Or, is it just a sack of empty promises? Affiliate Marketing is a simple way to generate revenue and originated way back 1994 by the cdnow.com and later in 1996 was pioneered by Amazon.com. As like any business models, it has its own merits and demerits.

1. The Upsides

As an affiliate, you are your own boss and you may work in the comfort of your home. In other words, it is a self-paced kind of business. Very flexible and can start even on a very minimal budget. No additional resources and trainings required. One has no limitations as to amount of products or the length of time you need to promote the products. Business aspects like customer support, bookkeeping and e-commerce are all handled and managed by the merchant who takes a lot of pressures from you. No investment is needed to produce the product, all you need to do is promote and resell the product.

As for the merchant, you benefit from a wider scope of selling your products and services. With no added cost on your part, through your affiliates, you get more customer awareness and eventually more sales. The key here is to look for related websites or affiliate sites where your target customers usually visit.

2. The Downsides

For an affiliate, the merchant holds the decision in terms of how much traffic, sales returns and commission structures. With these, sometimes affiliates are left with no commissions when suddenly a merchant decides to drop the deal midway of the transaction.

The merchant bears all consequences if their affiliates cheat on them. Loss of customers, high commission rates, unlawful use of trade names and logos, false advertising, spamming and hijacking are just some of these illegal practices.

Like in any business endeavour, affiliate marketing has its own shares of risks and successes. The point here is it is best that before you undergo any undertaking to fully equip yourself of everything you need to know. This is to minimize the downfalls as well as cushion yourself when you go tumbling down.
