Defining the Web Design Project

Before embarking on the web design process, the designer must take some to consider his project. Such considerations will usually revolve around a number of factors. Defining the project looks not only at the product itself but also the target market for the web product. Similarly one must ponder at the influence of other similar products in the markets. This will determine what kind of definition they come up with for their web project.

A typical definition of a web project starts with a client survey. Such a survey is best done by interviewing prospective clients. It is from this interview that the designer gets a clearer picture of what their project should look like. Similarly, the interview tackles other pertinent issues such as what sources of content will be used in addition to the purpose of the web design project. The purpose will also guide what branding techniques will be required to provide the envisaged perception.

The client survey is followed by a write up variously referred to as the creative brief or the project brief. The project brief acts like a shell of the web and provides structures upon which the final web design process is built. Some of the aspects that must be clearly stipulated in the project brief include the primary message to be communicated, the audience perception and audience. Others should cover competitive advantage, audience profile as well as the main goals for the project.

The third stage in defining the project lies in giving a face to the project audience. This is done by building a profile for the persona that is targeted by the project. There are several aspects of that must be brought out in the persona of every prospective client. These include their names, photo, description and quote. Other technical aspects of the persona include at least three user goals, a technical profile, and the main business objectives for which the site is being developed.

The next stage involves a developing the technical specifications around which the project, read web site will be hinged. This stage relies less on the results of the initial survey but more on technical standards upon which such projects are based in the firm or group for which the site is being developed. These specifications guide the finer details that will run the site. They such aspects as download time, screen resolution, accessibility, web standards and browser compatibility.

Once these specifications have been developed the definition of the project is as good as complete. This gives way to the development of a timeline upon which the project is to be based. Such a timeline also referred to as a project plan guides the scope in terms of time within which different components of the site must be delivered. Although plenty of emphasis is given to the time element, more emphasis must be placed on the allocation of resources that will make such efforts possible.

Finally, the web designer must detail what maintenance procedures to be used when the site is fully operational. The main components of a maintenance plan revolve around the updating of the site in addition to a regular review process. This will ensure the upholding of high standards. It also assures the developer of the continued functioning of the website.
