Deciding On Text Size

Although always taken for granted, the size of text that a web designer chooses to use when posting content has many effects on the overall outlook and usability of the site. Text size is also subject to other factors such as the amount of content that one hopes to use. Furthermore, the size of text must also fit in with the general outlook of the site. The designer must seek to strive a balance between the size of text, spacing and size of other page elements.

One of the deciding factors on what text size one should opt for is content size. The more content one has the more keenly one should watch what text size they should use. Since text size affects how readable content will appear, the designer must also stress the need for clarity. They must seek to use smaller text size if they are dealing with bigger content. Another factor that also determines text is the space within which the content must be posted. Bigger space will allow for bigger text size while smaller room may call for tactical use of text size to fit all the content.

The text size is also closely related to the sizing other page elements. If the designer adopts a very large size for most of the items on the web page, he may be hard pressed to keep the text size small. Even though, the content must remain readable the designer must also ensure that all the contents on the web page as well as the appearance thereof is balanced.

Web design has seen a long struggle of how appropriately text should be sized. In the end, designers always put to increase text size explaining the rationale behind such action as the need to improve noticeability. While such an agreement may be true for other items on the web page, it may not apply in all cases where text size is concerned.

Proponents of big text size argue that such size is accessible to more readers. This sounds like good news to anyone who may be suffering one or another form of vision complication. Computer users who have to read from LCD screens in the sun, skimmers as well as those who like to keep their computer screens further away would benefit from big text size. There is no guessing which other groups of users would benefit from such an arrangement.

Even though the use of big text size may be encouraged in various situations, the designer must still remain cautious. One must choose when to use and when not post text in big size. There must be a distinction for instance between titles and sub titles. While color and effects such as bolding could be used to create a distinction, text size if well utilized can also draw attention to such features. The concept behind an increase in text size should be to increase effectiveness where appearance is concerned. This should be the over riding concern for the designer above all other considerations. Finally, bigger size works better with shorter content. It can also help to propel simple messages into greater significance.
