Using CSS in Webpage Design
What exactly is CSS? For starters CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. It got its name from its property of having three possible designs: integration the Inline, Internal and External style sheet. Cascading because of the fact that the effect of the style sheet is dependent on the type of style applied, from external, to internal and finally to inline. When CSS was introduced along with HTML 4.01 the latter had discarded some elements but was compensated by the former. Such web design power that is being carried by the Cascading Style Sheets is as follows:
- Block elements – Cascading style sheets allows web designers to control margins and borders around blocks, setting floating block elements on a page.
- Font Control – HTML’s font element is considered to be deprecated because font design now rests with CSS. The Cascading style sheet gives ability to the web developer to specify Font size, type and family among others.
- Color Manipulation – instead of giving one general color for the whole page as what HTML have been doing, the Cascading Style Sheet has the ability to specify color, either background or foreground on the different elements.
- Background Control – HTML has a limited power in displaying a background image as it conforms only to the size of the picture. CSS on the other hand is so powerful that it also has the ability to control the positioning of the image in the over all web design.
- Integration of media types – CSS gives web designers the ability to create styles for different output devices such as print and aural.
- Interface Redesign – Cascading style sheets are capable of modifying the look or appearance of some system features such as scroll bars and mouse cursors.
- Positioning power – Cascading style sheet allows users to place elements at their desired position or coordinates within the web page.
