Crawling of Search Engine
It is very interesting dealing with web design and the stuff associated with it because there are many things which happen there some which sound out of this world. In this rather short article, I am going to explain what is meant by “spidering” onesr web site or a Search Engine “crawling”
Background
First I want us to take a look at a little background about the field of Search Engines. If one looks at this issue critically, he may notice that it seems like the web Search Engines try to bring order to the mayhem that the whole Internet is essentially. If one can utilize a Search Engine he can locate web sites that are related to his chosen topic of research or any topic he writes about.
One would always do this by entering one or more phrases or words which are related to the topic one is looking for or wants to get information about. It is noted that there is a difference between human beings and search engines. For a person to use a Search Engine it is quite simple, but on the other hand for the Search Engine this job is not as easy.
Just to make one have a glimpse of the idea of the scale needed in running a Search Engine, at the moment google is run on 10,000 servers and has a crazy quality or caliber of employees (if I may put it that way): one may not believe but it has 50 or more PHD accomplished soft ware engineers who work on the search engine software constantly to maintain its quality and also enable it to meet the challenges of the ever growing demands of the internet world.
And has one ever thought of what the software actually does? Here we will look at just a small part of it. This part is the one which goes out and finds web pages on the internet.
The Bot
There is a program which is called the GoogleBot. This program visits ones website and then reads each page. It does so by following the links that are within ones site. It also makes a note of all the words that are used on ones pages which can later be used to find ones pages when those words are being searched for.
This is the process that is referred to as “spidering” or “crawling”. It is called so because of the way in which the robot- in this case Goolebot- navigates through ones site to find its way.
However, one should note that this does not apply only to Google’s robot; this also is the way of working of most internet search engines.
Once GoogleBot has finished examining ones site the information is then passed on to another part of the software that goes on to analyze the words and phrases so as to get them ready to be added to the index.
One then needs only to wait for the next Google update after his site has been crawled.
