Content Is Not King

Sorry to disappoint you, guys, but I have to jolt you back to your senses and remind you that you are not the driver in this business and in this industry. The gate keeper may have said it before and may have kept on holding the flag against the age-old principle in marketing that “customer is king,” but that was a good many years ago. It may have been but it never really was.

The Danger in Content Is King

This extensive talk raging about content as king is in reality very dangerous for the web design industry. The drum rolling and the breast beating may lead to a terrible situation where content writers and web designers will think of themselves as the lion “king of the jungle” until they are trounced by the elephant. It is safer to be simply proud of what we do and do it best.

Effectiveness Is a Customer Parameter

We all know this: content is very important, may be critically important. But  content is only one element in a medium such as the Web. To come up with a website, which is what we call our specific presentation platform, we need the other elements such as the  physical appearance of the site, the number of pages, the layout and sequencing of the contents, among other elements.

Having these, however, does not give us an effective site. To have an effective site, we need to input the elements for site effectiveness, and here the dictator emerges: effectiveness is all in the hands of the customer.

It is good, almost imperative, that we do not lose this handle on the customer. In fact, the customer must even be in front of us as we go about our web design work so that we do not lose sight of him. One may be a very good writer or good designer by his own definition,  and this may be because of his education, training and experience, but a good designer is not just a product of education, training and experience.

He is good because he creates effective websites and these websites are effective because they have contents, design and other elements that enable the customer to get what he wants.

Designer Empathy

Writers, designers and developers are industry players in the Web. For all intents, they are professionals. But they are not the only players. As the internet evolves, young as it is, more players and professionals will emerge, naturally creating an openly competitive environment. While simultaneously more customers will recognize the emergence of the internet as the most effective information medium, more players will compete for favor in the customer’s eyes.

The players who will stand out are those who can fill in the customer’s shoes and visualize how he would behave with his fingers when he opens his computer. Initially, the players who will stay are those who can virtually hold the customer’s hand and be led to where the customer wants to go.

Eventually, the players who will stay are those who know where the customer wants to go and who create the best design paths for the customer according to their (players’) best judgment, then virtually hold the customer’s hand and lead the customer to where he wants to go.

The last player standing will be he who recognizes that the customer is king.
