CONTENT FOR THE NEW CUSTOM WEB DESIGNER

Are you new in the custom web design “battleground”? Have the many books on custom web design taught you about the importance of content in the web sites you produce today and in the future? Are you now deep into a custom web design project, and wondering what content to fill your pages with, and do you feel that you do not have the talent or the financial resources to produce content in a hurry?

Stop biting your nails. Relax. You are just like thousands of other aspiring web designers, and as the song goes, “you are not alone.” (Is there such a song?)

It is often said, and hearing about it has become a little tedious, that “content is king”. Although a few web citizens among us debate the universal truthfulness of this statement, search engines seem to agree with it wholeheartedly, and rewards content-rich sites handsomely with impressive page ranking points, and consequently potential high traffic to those sites.

In simple terms, content is anything you put inside the body of your web page. If your page has the text “Welcome to my Custom Web Design Tips Site” displayed in large font and bold letters across the top margin, and beneath it a short message that says “This custom web design page is under construction — Please come back later”, that is content.

It may be ho-hum content, but it is indeed content, no matter how you and all your friends look at it.

Content that really matters to your site visitors is one that informs or entertains, or both. A site announcing that it is still under construction neither informs nor entertains; it performs a naive ritual called self-destruction.

Usually, content comes in the form of regularly updated articles related (translation: “relevant”) to the purpose of your site. If your site is about beauty queens, people expect articles about the Miss World Pageant, or something similar. Remember the magic words: regularly updated.

For new designers who find it difficult to load their pages with articles, they can turn to the Web for free content like: weather forecasts; public domain games, puzzles, and quizzes; and, especially, news feeds.
