Complementing One’s Outlook with Rich Surfaces

Rich surfaces have a proved to be a popular hit across the board. Both web designers as well as the web browsing public seem to concur on the kind of special effects that rich surfaces bring onto the site. The use of three dimensional effects is one of the leading ways though which rich text surfaces are achieved in web design. By so doing, one improves not only the appearance of a web browser but also objects. They are made to appear more real. Designers use combination of processes such as reflections, drop shadows and gradients in a specific order and mix to achieve such effects.

The overall effect of rich surfaces is a design that carries superior quality hence an attractive appearance. The designer must remember to use only doses of such effects to improve their effectiveness. The reverse would only imply lopsided images and objects that are not only cramped up but lack the necessary balance. On the other hand, appropriately placed rich surfaces provide an air of real objects that are not only solid but also appear complete.

The use of rich surfaces therefore brings about images of certain actual objects such as plastic buttons, marble floors as well as water droplets. Rich surfaces create senses such as those of touch and many aesthetic qualities. By enhancing the solidity and real world status of images on the browsers, one enhances their ability to be believed. This boots the kind of appeal that they face with users felling that can actually touch them.

Rich surfaces must nevertheless be used sparingly. More importantly, the designer must select specific items or elements upon which the rich surface effect will be applied. This does not imply that rich surfaces my not fit on the rest of the elements. Rather its application there could have less effect while in worse cases; it could have a distracting effect there. Sensitivity is a concept that will serve the designer well in deciding how best to apply rich surfaces.

Before applying rich surfaces, the designer must be user to get the fundamentals of all the elements right. If the designer wants to apply three dimensional effects on icons yet the icon choice is wrong this could not only a wastage of time and effort it could also aggravate the appearance of such an icon.  In addition to that, if one is using light to achieve some of the rich surface aspects, consistency will be of prime importance. The light source must not be seen to be shifting while one is till at the same spot. A mix up will create much confusion hence rob an otherwise good design of quality.

Creating rich surfaces neither starts nor ends with the elements the designer is working on. The three dimensional effect must have a background in which to work. This implies that the rest of the browser must be relatively flat hence create some contrast against which the rich surfaces will be felt. An acceptable standard of rich surface should have three dimensional objects that are not drawn excessively towards reality. Striving to increase the reality of rich surfaces will only increases the designer’s work load while at the same time make page assets appear bigger. This is entirely unnecessary.
