Communicating Effectively With Your Web Design Company

When hiring a web designer, communicating with the web design professional can be the hardest part. This is because the both of you might not express your ideas in the same way when it comes to the website. The following are some ways to effectively get your
point across to the web designer.

Trying to get the web designer to understand the web design layout you have in mind can be quite a difficult process. Bringing the picture in your mind to tangible form is the greatest hindrance between you and the final outcome of a finished website. The talent of the web design professional becomes redundant if you cannot communicate functionally in ways that he understands. He will be unable to use his talent to get the kind of website you want.

You might face two situations: You know exactly what content to display on the website, but you do not know how exactly to display it; or, you have the content and the display in your mind but don’t know how to implement all of that.
Most would think that the former situation is worse than the latter, but not being able to express yourself is very frustrating. Giving a web designer complete freedom with regards to the web design is not a good idea, because he bases all actions solely on the content. Explaining the nature of the website, whether it is personal or commercial, is simpler to get across rather than the colors or
headers you have in mind.

Really, in both situations, one should adopt the following approach, with minor tweaks depending on the situation. If you already know of a site that is pretty much like the site you have in mind, give the site’s address to your web design professional. By doing so, you’ll give him a clearer image of what you want. He will be looking at what you want, but from a technical angle. So, maybe you should give him more than one site’s url because the more addresses you give him, the faster the designer will understand what you want without you having to explain things in formal terms. Also, it may be that not one site has all the things you have in mind for your own website. Take your time finding the websites you want to use as examples. That way you’ll economize on time you otherwise would’ve wasted trying to make the designer understand what kind of web design you wanted.

While you may be the chief ‘talker’ do listen to what the web designer has to say to you. If he uses terms you do not understand, ask for their meaning because at the end of all meetings, both of you should understand each other.

Remember, that the individual you hired is a professional and the product he delivers at the end will look professional and be of high quality. Trust the web design professional’s judgment. Asking the web designer to give you regular updates is okay and in fact a good idea so both of you stay on the same page.

As far as cost is concerned, once you and the designer have agreed on the web design, ask for a price quote. Simple modifications are usually included in the cost. Major changes however might not come under the cost umbrella. Make sure there is a clear contract explaining ‘major’ and ‘minor’ changes. Find out how many changes you can make after the final website is made, without ringing up more costs.
