Refrain from Using Fancy Web Programming

Stick to simple and basic web technologies when it comes to web design.  Not all users may have flash players, so it would be useless to have a flash-based site.  They won’t be able to view your content so they wouldn’t appreciate your site at all.  If you’re using flash for your navigation bar, the visitors who don’t have flash players might not be able to navigate through your site.  Using extensive javascript could also be a turn off, as many individuals set their browsers to warn them when too much javascript is used.  The security warnings might drive your visitors away.

Don’t Irritate Your Visitors

As much as possible, keep your design consistent.  You can use style sheets to make sure your design is even all throughout.  Use a consistent font for your headings, body, and links.  Exercise caution when making text bold or italic.  You don’t want to have a page filled with confusing fonts and underlined, bolded, or italicized text.  It may look enticing to you, but won’t probably work for your visitors.

Don’t Write Long Paragraphs

When designing your layout, break your content into smaller chunks as possible.  When people visit your page, they won’t have the time to read through long paragraphs.  They’ll only be skimming your page and reading the main and sub headlines, and the photos.  That’s why break your ideas into chunks and group them into headlines that are strong and powerful.

Your Visitors Won’t Know Exactly What You’re Talking About

Face it – just because you know everything about your content doesn’t mean your visitor will.  As much as possible, design your website in such a way where the visitor can easily grasp your ideas without much thought.  Use simple terminologies, give examples and stories, testimonials, and relevant photos or diagrams.  After all, you want to get your message across to your audience.
