Five Common Elements of Website Design
The design and layout of a webpage depends on the type and purpose of the website. For example, landing pages have different website design requirements than niche web pages. But generally, there are five basic and common elements that are present in most website designs. These include the following: header, navigation menu, text or content area, footer and an area for links for important (although less frequently visited websites).
The header – It is most commonly an image that measures the full width of the webpage. It provides a visitor with a quick glimpse of what your website is about. The width of the header can range from 600 pixels to the full width of the visitor’s monitor screen. The usual size is about 750 by 800 pixels that most visitors find comfortable. Thus, for your header to be more effective, it should be within the 750-800 pixel range as well as being simple yet attractive.
Navigation Menu – This is typically a list of menu items that help the user find their way throughout the site. Your site’s navigation menu must be comprehensive enough to help the reader find anything he or she is looking for. But it should be simple and easy to use so that the user can find that information quickly.
The Text Area – Clear, crisp and black text on white background is the best choice because reading it is much easier on the eyes. The title should be at the top area and should generally be within an H1 header tag. Use professional fonts and allow for plenty of white space. This makes the text more comfortable to read.
The Footer – This is typically a reflection of the header, enclosing the content area and giving the page a sense of completion. There are no strict rules on the footer’s height but a third of the header’s height is generally followed. For a more harmonious look, using the colors and general layout of the header is recommended.
Important Links – These includes links that are important for legal and credibility but are rarely clicked by the user, these include contact page, privacy policy, terms of use policy and disclaimers.
