Since people tend to perceive and retain information visually we have to take into account the specifics of visual stimuli. These visual stimuli are Hue, Saturation and Lightness.

Hue is defined as the degree of similarity between the basic color and the combined colors. Color combinations that will have similar hues are site visitor repellants. Saturation is known as the degree to which the color is different from white, black or gray which is also known as achromatic colors. An example of a good saturation design is by combining a rose colored background with white text. It is a bad idea to combine a rose colored background which is close to being an achromatic gray with a grayish blue background which is also near the achromatic gray saturation. So, the rule of thumb with regards to saturation is do not combine colors that are near a single achromatic color.

Lightness or Contrast is regarded as the degree of lightness or darkness of a color when viewed. This is a simple rule in color combination; we have to remember this basic rule when contrast is being considered; “Light text on a light background and Dark Text on a dark background do not match”.
