Why You Need Clean Code in Web Design

Why You Need Clean Code
The importance of clean code has always been a hot topic in the web design industry. Many people stick to it in the name of professionalism; others think it’s really the end result that matters. HTML editors have made it appear less and less significant. But as web trends change, many designers are learning the benefits of developing clean, readable code. From marketing to site usability, proper coding can serve you in more ways than one.
Faster loading: Browsers read every character in your source code, so unnecessary tags will definitely slow you down. While the difference may only be a few seconds, you have to remember that web users don’t like waiting. With a cleaner page, the two seconds you save may make all the difference.
Smaller page size: For the most part, page size has to do with loading time. But that’s not the only thing affected by HTML file sizes. For one thing, they eat up more bandwidth every time a user visits your site. Combined with pictures, graphics, and all your other media, a large site of heavily coded pages can easily weigh down on your server.
Search engine friendliness: Search engines crawl through HTML code to find specific tags and keywords, which are then used for ranking results. If you place a premium on search engine traffic, you want them to index your site as fast as possible. This means not making them wade through pages of code when they could get the same results with a shorter page.
Better compatibility: With dozens of browsers on the market, it’s hard enough ensuring compatibility even with proper coding. A messy source code increases the risk of your site turning up badly, especially in some of the older browsers. Before doing a browser test, run your code through a cleaner (such as HTML Tidy) to minimize errors.
Easier editing: Finally, clean code helps you just as much as it helps your readers. When you have to go back and change, messy code is simply an eyesore. On a clean page, it’s much easier to spot errors, organize tables, and picture how it translates onto the browser.
