Choose Your Website Fonts Carefully

The internet is really all about information. There may be entertainment and interaction possibilities out there, but information is what it was built on, and what it’s still all about.

Most of that information is in the form of writing. Articles, e-books, white papers, blogs, and forums – they all use text as a medium to create and share information with the broader internet community at large.

That means that when it comes right down to it, choosing a font is probably more important than any other design element on your website. Here are a few tips to help you get it right!

If you are using html or CSS to specify a font name, your server will have it correct. The problem is, if you use an obscure font to create your content, your visitors probably won’t have it, and your page will display incorrectly.
You can always choose a “web safe” font – Georgia, Times New Roman, Verdana or Arial – these are fonts that everyone who reads your content is likely to have.
Impact, Courier New and a few others are also common fonts, that most operating systems are likely to support, and can be useful for headings or other text items.
The size of your font is also a problem. Some fonts look terrible when enlarged, and therefore are completely unsuitable for heading (for example Verdana) others work fine either way, and still others are better when viewed larger.
Another size related issue is to make sure your font is large enough to be legible – too small and it’s incomprehensible. As a rule of thumb, depending on your text body font, 10 or 12pt is the minimum!
Sans serif fonts (such as Arial, which, unlike Times New Roman has no “tail” on the bottom of letters) display better online, while serif fonts work better for print media. If you’re using CSS and setting a separate print style, use sans serif for the web page, and serif for your printouts.
Keep it professional. Avoid the use of novelty fonts, and try to remember that your visitors have to read your content in the font you choose!

Content truly is king. But even if you have great content, a terrible font can ruin the reading experience, and chase visitors away. So keep it simple and clear, and keep visitors on your site!
