Changing Site Design – Factors to Consider- Part 2

In this article I continue discussing the factors one should consider when changing the design of his site.

  1.  Making the Changes in the Site Appearance Only By Modifying the CSS File

If ones site uses Cascading Style Sheets to manage appearance and he merely wants to change the appearance, then it is possible to do this without a major reworking. One can simply modify the CSS file. Such kinds of changes are easy for one to make since one does not have to go through every page on his site in order to modify it.
  2.  To Get a Web Editor that is proper.

Let’s face the facts. This of course will not be the last time one will redesign his website. Am sure at the time this article is written, the freecountry.com may have gone through say at least 5 site redesigns since it was created. Tastes do change, as it is with web dynamics. And as one gets more experienced with his site, he may find that things that seemed once like a good idea hinder the growth of his site. As a result, the redesign one does which may at the moment appear like the final one will be changed as well.

To reduce the  hassle that one has to go through every time he makes a site design change, it’s probably best that he invests in a sophisticated web editor which is designed to manage site changes like this. Most web editors that are free do not really have the site management tools that are advanced similar to those of a full blown commercial web editor like dream weaver. Even though these free editors have “project” or ” site ” facilities, they are at best rudimentary.  Commercial editors for example Dreamweaver allow one to change his web design on a single “template” page and have all his changes automatically being replicated across all the pages on his site that depend on that particular template. One will thus not need to waste a lot of his time doing search and replace operations and the manual fixing of the odd page using his hand.

It is a fact that these commercial web editors are expensive but when ones site grows beyond few pages and he is faced with the need to modify the design, its cost will pay back more for itself through the time he saves.

  3. Understanding and Testing the Impact of Site Design

Unless ones site redesign is very minor, it’s usually bound to have some sort of impact on his website. The redesign can either increase or decrease the traffic flow through ones site – for example, visitors might now be able to find pages that were previously buried in ones site or perhaps they may no longer find those pages at all. One can monitor this through his site’s web statistics by examining the path people take through his site. Or the redesign may cause a decrease or decrease in ones advertising or sales income. Indeed, before one even redesigns, he needs to understand how people use his web page. One way of avoiding major fluctuations in the fortune of ones website is testing a potential redesign on only a few pages for a short period of time and examining its impact on his statistics as well as income.

  4. Before changing the site design back up the site.

It is quite important that one keeps an up-to-date backup of his existing website before he changes its design. That way, if one finds that his new design has got undesirable side-effects, he can easily revert back to his old design by re-uploading his backup. For example, if one suddenly finds that a large percentage of his visitors no longer go to his Order pages after his redesign, one might want to quickly re-upload his old pages while he figures out what was wrong with the new structure or appearance
