Buying a Domain Name – Precautions to Take

In this article I try to address the unappealing practices the take place in the world of domain names and the precautions one should take to avoid falling a victim to these practices.

Unscrupulous Domain Registrars and Domain Name Front Running

Domain name front running.

Domain name front running is practice that is observed when an individual monitors attempts for checking out currently nonexistent domain names, and then he snaps out the names quickly before the individual enquiring can buy it through a legal channel like the registrar. The main intention of this act is to sell the particular domain name to someone interested at a much higher price. Therefore, making a good profit even without developing the website on the domain.
Am not sure, at the moment whether this practice occurs or not. Mostly it has just been a notion held by some people. However, many people believe that domain name front running is very real because such monitoring is possible and can be easily accomplished. This suspicion is very particular when people lose a domain name they have just checked on the site or somewhere else.
•    Unscrupulous Domain Registrars
Unscrupulous domain name registrars are also a nuisance. If one goes to such registrars to simply check the availability of a domain name, they are likely to snap up his domain name. Their operation unlike front runners is usually designed to be more anti-competitive than anything else. Still, one can register his domain but at a much higher price- although this is particular to them for one can not register with somebody else. One will not be allowed to buy that name from any other registrar, because records indicate that the domain name has already been bought.
Lessons from this Malpractices Scams
1.    Before one goes to the registrar he should list down a few domain names that he wants. He should list his possibilities and purpose to buy even before he reaches the registrars page to check.
2.    One should only proceed to the registrar he plans to buy from. The domain should not be checked with other registrars, for the fun of it. Also, one should avoid checking the existence of the domain by typing it in his browser window. This is because if that domain name front running is in existence, then that query for the domain name that does not exist will be noted. It is a risky undertaking.
3.    One should buy the domain immediately once he notices that the domain is available. Because it may not be available few moments later. If he does  not have a plan for the domain name then I do advise that he does not check it or one can buy then plan for it later. One should consider himself committed to the name after checking for it. Unless he really is not in need of the name anyway.
4.    One can buy both sets of domains if he is not sure which set is better than the other. Usually new domains are cheap. Also one can always let a domain name expire if he does not need it. Due to their reduced prices it is not wise to save a few pennies at the moment and spend much later to a resell.
5.    Finally, one should not ask publicly for opinions about which domain name is better for a particular purpose. This is because he runs run the risk of someone sabotaging him and quickly registering the domain name one. This domain name might not be available later even if it is for a resell as good domain names are hard to imagine.
If indeed one must ask, he should do so to a person whom they relate closely. Or better he should ask if already he has bought the kit and caboodle. By doing so, it would not matter which option the friend will advise.
