Blogs and Websites – What is the Difference?
These days, there is an alternative to the traditional website. Instead of a multi page website, you can start a blog.
How Are Blogs Different?
Unlike websites, that have multiple, hyperlinked pages of content, blogs are all on a single page, and any new content is simply uploaded to the top of the page. It does make them a simpler proposition in terms of design and implementation, but does limit the navigation aspect of the site!
The History of Blogs
Blogs are actually where it all started. Before Tim Berners Lee uploaded his historic website, with hyperlinked pages, almost all sites were what we would recognize as blogs today.
The earliest “official” blogs arrived in 1997, and were basically a collection of links, but within two years, it had become the norm for longer articles and news pieces, along with opinions and information, to form the backbone of a blog. The modern blog had arrived.
Since then, it has been nothing but blue sky – the numbers of bloggers grow daily, with private individuals using them as a way to stay in touch with friends and family, or share a passion with the world, and companies using them to spread news, and advertising messages.
How to Get a Blog
Blogging really makes publishing your own content on the web accessible to everyone. With sites like WordPress available for free registration, it is economically accessible to everyone.
Then there is the fact that the technical aspect of the process is pretty much taken care of. Most blog sites allow you to choose a ready-made template, apply a few simple changes, and then get blogging.
In fact, it is literally possible to have a blog up and running within minutes.
Uses
If you are a private individual, a blog will probably serve all your online needs adequately. Companies however, will probably find that the structured aspect of a website makes them an attractive proposition as a main portal for clients and potential clients.
Blogs do however offer companies a perfect forum for easily updating news and similar items, as well as providing an opportunity to keep online content fresh. This is why many companies are now opting to have a blog section on their site, as well as traditional content.
