Everyone has visited a site that suffers from an overload of images or text. Some have dozens of animated images or suffer from a wall of text that quickly becomes daunting to a reader. Some sites manage to organize their information better, but can still contain far too much information. Sites that have pages upon pages of information can be difficult to navigate. They can also make it harder for a user to find exactly what they are looking for, even if the site’s navigation system is logical.

A light and simple design will keep users from being overwhelmed. An intro page with paragraphs upon paragraphs of information about what the user is supposed to do to use the site will deter all but the most determined visitors. A simple series of links will allow the user to more effectively filter the information they wish to receive. Letting the user choose the text they are presented with means the initial design can remain simple and only users who wish to see huge amounts of text will be presented with it.

Graphics can be one of the worst offenders when it comes to keeping a site simple and clean. Large graphics can deter users because of their size alone. The bigger the graphic, the longer the page takes to load. And too many of these large graphics may increase the load time to a point where users refuse to wait any longer for the site to load. Simple and small graphics can still be appealing and may decrease load times noticeably.

A well-designed site will typically be very functional and upfront with the user. A simple site lets the user know exactly what to do and where to go rather than dumping them into a pile of information. Though it may sound silly, it is important for designers to remember that KISS leads to LOVE.
