Basic Web Design Layout and Text Concepts

There is nothing wrong about going back to basic concepts. If anything, it is such a relief especially with the sites out there that are just overkill: too much graphics, too flashy a font, and to many a thing to download. Instead of getting impressed, your readers will just feel frustrated and annoyed by these things and leave your site or page. To avoid this, try to keep things in check.

You might be carried away by the new things you have learned in web design to the point that the pages and sites you create have too much detail in them. Not only are these pages and sites an eyesore, they are a headache to download as well. Keep in mind that the reader went to the page or site for the content and not to be bombarded with the trappings you have attached to your site.

One trick to keep it simple is to go with standard layouts. While you may have a ball using 6 to 8 sheets, your reader will not have even half the fun. Keep it simple and as much as possible, use a three-column layout. This makes a page look clean and orderly as well as making it easy to navigate around.

White space in your layout creates a sense of order and balance. When you write on a sheet of paper, you do not use every space and nook, and cranny. Do you? In the same way, white space lets your readers eyes rest awhile while they shift from one area of the page to another.

When using fonts, it is best to pick the ones that are clean and simple. Stay away from cursive-based fonts especially since most of them do not translate well in slower speeds or high resolutions. Choose fonts that are not too complicated and can be easily read on the monitor.

In the same way, try to limit the variety of fonts to two in a page or site. Not only is it annoying to see different fonts in every page, it also looks ill made when you have ten different fonts in a site. Besides, not all fonts you use or you have can be read and translated by your readers’ computers.
