The Basic Structure of HTML Elements

Elements are the basic components that are used to build the structure of HTML markup. The elements define the restrictions which need to be followed in designing HTML documents. If the right kinds of elements are not used, the document is considered to be invalid. A HTML element contains two tags, a start tag and an end tag. The attributes of an element are contained within this tag. There are some elements which do not contain any content but must have a closing tag.

Elements are used to describe the use of the text that is contained in these tags. Structural markup fails to denote any rendering that is specific in terms of the way in which the information will be presented. Different web browsers give instructions that guide web designers who wish to have the content presented here on the requirements that guide the operations of the web browser. If the specifications are not strictly adhered to, then the document in question fails to load successfully. This is how crucial visual rendering is to the success of web design elements.

Once the elements are specified at the first level of web design, they are taken to the next level which involves the use of CSS to determine the manner in which information will be represented in the web page. Anchor elements help in the formation of hyperlinks and anchor tags which are defined within the specifications of HTML syntax.

Elements contain some very important components called attributes. Most of these attributes are in the form of name-value pairs which have to be separated by the sign ‘=’. They have to be written at the start of every tag in which they are required. They come immediately after the name of the element. The values of the attributes should always be quoted. Leaving the values unquoted is a very unsafe practice and ought to be discouraged. Web designers are sometimes tempted to leave out the values since the mere inclusion of the attributes at the start of the element gives the intended meaning in terms of HTML markup.

HTML elements take several commonly used attributes such as id. Id is an attribute which is responsible for the creation of document-wide identifier of a document which is very unique. The use of style sheets with this attribute gives the presentational properties. The style sheets are very crucial since they enable the web author to concentrate on the specific elements without worrying about how they will be presented.

Class attributes are used to classify similar elements for purposes of presentation. For instance, in order to indicate that all elements with a certain class value have a subordinate role in the web page, there is a specific attribute that ought to go with such an instruction.

All the elements are supposed to be gathered and indicated as footnotes in order for them to be separated from the file source. In some cases, the web author may choose to codes which are non-attribute with the aim of removing the cumbersomeness that comes with the use of so many attributes.
