What to Avoid in Web Design
Good website design aims to provide the visitors with a satisfactory user experience. However, sometimes, designers get caught up in all the fancy elements and gimmickry of design that they forget that web design is more about the visitor’s experience rather than the designer’s. They end up with a lousy web design that hinders the positive experience of the visitor who ends up leaving the site.
There are some elements of lousy web design that are nearly universally disliked by visitors. These web design elements should be avoided like the plague.
• Embedded music :–
Imagine yourself browsing the web with your laptop on a cozy and quiet café and you inadvertently visit a certain site with embedded music that instantly and unceremoniously blares through your computer’s speakers. That is definitely not a positive experience. Even though it’s tempting to add embedded music to a site, it will most likely just irritate your visitors. Embedded music also slows down the loading page of the site. It also distracts the visitor from focusing on the elements that you want them to, whether it’s the opt-in box or your ads.
• Flash graphics: –
Yes, they look cool and will probably impress your visitors. But these flash graphics more often don’t really improve the visitor’s experience. Also, many of your visitors who love flash graphics don’t actually know how to use them effectively. More importantly, they drag down the page’s loading time and will most probably just annoy your visitor. Flash-based pages are also very difficult to optimize for search engines.
• Pop-ups: –
Pop-ups are still one of the most annoying things on the net and are often ignored (and often blocked) by visitors. However, some pop-ups also work. For instance, if you want to encourage visitors to sign up for newsletter or register for a service, you may opt to use a pop-under instead. This window opens behind the page and is less prominent. Your visitor will only see it once he closes the page; therefore, it’s not that intrusive.
• Bad typography: –
This is one of the most common web design mistakes out there – web pages with clashing font styles, texts that are too large or too small, and font colors that clash or blend in with the background color and end up being unreadable. The best thing to do is to keep your typography simple, clean and readable.
By keeping your website design simple and avoiding these common design mistakes, you will make your visitor’s experience in your site pleasant. They will surely come back for more.
