What to Avoid When Designing a Website

Even if your website looks amazing, there are still a few common pitfalls that you may want to take note of, to make sure it’s user friendly too! Here are a few common mistakes you’ll want to avoid when creating a site:

•    Don’t forget to make text resizable. Remember, there are billions of potential visitors to your site out there. Not all of them have great eyesight! By giving them the option to resize text, you make your site more accessible to more people!
•    Don’t open PDF documents directly. If you want to include PDF documents, make them downloadable rather. They take a long time to open online, and aren’t really comfortable to read in a browser!
•    Don’t forget to set hyperlinks and navigation icons to change color for visited sites! Going round and round a site to find information gets annoying after a while!
•    Don’t forget consistency. It makes it easier to follow what’s happening on your site. Stick to design elements, colors and fonts throughout.
•    Don’t just paste a page of continuous text onto your site! Editing and formatting text to make it easier to read is a must! Use shorter paragraphs, sub headings, bullets, and even links to important information to make text easy to read and follow!
•    Don’t be tempted to slap together any old information. Group different kinds of information together, on separate pages. This makes it easier to find, and to follow!
•    Don’t set pages within your site to open as a new window! If you’re linking to an external site, fine, but having lots of windows open with every click is just annoying.
•    Don’t go overboard with graphics and images. Avoid large graphics that take ages to load, and rather use thumbnails of larger images, that visitors can click on if necessary.
•    Don’t change your URL frequently. Remember, people might bookmark your site, and going to an empty page is no fun. If you have to change your URL, leave a page with the new address, or an automatic link in the old page’s place.
•    Don’t forget to update content!

No page will ever be perfect, so don’t aim for perfection, if you do, your site may never see the light of day! However, do take these tips to heart, and, whenever you run into a problem, or a visitor lets you know about something they’d like changed, you can work on improving your site.

Remember, a website is an evolving thing. If you meant it to stay the same for years, you’d write a book, wouldn’t you?
