An Appealing Site

Has one ever paused and asked himself what the characteristics of a properly designed web site are? This is because a good site definitely appeals not only to visitors but also to one self. Many a times, site visitors do want to visit sites that they do call well designed. In this article I do explore what we do often refer to as properly designed web sites.

A properly designed website is defined as a user-friendly, search-friendly, and a persuasive site which does convert visitors to customers.

If one’s website is properly designed, it will actually be automatically optimized for search engines. While one’s website is still in the concept stage, one should take care to separate textual elements from the design elements. Although the information which is on one’s website will bring the visitor, the fact is that it is the actual design which makes an impression. A website which is poorly laid out as well as hard to use will not attract as well as keep visitors no matter how wonderful the information it contains is.

One should choose his layout, colors, style as well as information based on the characteristics of his target customer base. If one’s customer base is the state-of the art engineers, one can utilize the latest bells and whistles so as to give his customers an eye-popping experience. If one’s customer base is a little bit more average, or if one is not sure, then he should design for the most common browser as well as resolution. Then he should check his page in the site viewer at Anybrowser.com and then make any changes necessary. One should not neglect his customers with special needs. Designing for people having disabilities does make the user experience easier for everyone. One should Google Designing sites for universal access for some tips.

One’s home page should have at least 275 words of text which describe his product and entices his customer to look through his site. One’s first paragraphs (80 lines or so) are usually the most important and should include his primary keywords and his tagline with a call to action. One’s primary and secondary keywords should be almost 5% of the text on his home page, used in complete as well as logical sentences. However, one should note: It does not appear that the search engines are reading or even following the information that is contained in iframes.

One should structure this information so that his primary keywords are compelling headlines in <H1> tags and his secondary keywords are the subsequent selling headlines in <H2> tags. One should make his text easy to read.  One should use lots of white space and bullet information where it is appropriate.

Every graphic is supposed to have an alt tag which accurately describes the graphic using the particular keyword. One should not put keywords in the same color as that of the background text! This is termed keyword stuffing and one will be penalized for it.

One should remember, first impressions do count. One should make the first page of his website one that does clearly explain who he is, where he is, and what one can offer his visitors. One should give them a reason to have confidence in him.  If one is an expert on something, he should state his qualifications up front.

One should not use a splash page, or design his site entirely in Flash. Besides eliminating customers who might not have the necessary software to view one’s site, this kind of design provides no clues to the search engine bots. One should not use a framed site for the same reason. One should take a hard look at his home page. Is it very professional in appearance as well as attractive to his target audience? Are the graphics memorable, thus enhancing the value of ones site? Is the navigation quite intuitive as well?
