An affiliate program is a system that pays a website owner a commission for each referral from their site that follows through to a sale.  Most of the larger e-commerce currently trading has links with an affiliate network of one form or another.  A potential customer will find their way through the affiliate system by clicking on a link or a picture advert that has been placed within the web design.  There is also the option to be paid per click on links or adverts.  This tends to be for a much lower fee but does mean that even if there is no sale you still earn some form of money. 

So how can you successfully operate with affiliates? When you are creating your web design you must know which companies you plan on contacting to create affiliations with or if you are going to use one of the many affiliation networks that are available.  You also need to take into consideration where you are going to place these advertisements.

When search engines list your web design they have a crawl; virtual look, at your website to see if you have any form of spamming.  If you were to place pages and pages of affiliate sites in the hope that someone will come across your site and click on one this is classed as spam.  They will then simply not list your website, no matter how great the web design.  This is why you must ensure you have a web design that has an alternate guise, you may be promoting web design tools and then strategically place computer related adverts within the page of your web design.  This will allow your website to be listed and people are more likely to come across your affiliate link once they have read your web page.  Too many advertisements and you may put visitors off from returning as all they see are adverts but one or two well placed adverts can act as the graphics within your web design, making it appealing to the eye. 

Affiliate companies tend to be more profitable to the actual e-commerce website as it is free advertising until sale all over the internet.  If you are venturing into implementing affiliate links into your web design, you may make some income but you would need a high amount of visitors on your site to make it very profitable.
