Advantages of Using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)

There are many advantages to using CSS. One of them is that a web designer has more control over the stylistic devices which they use in their websites. Hence, drastically improving the presentation of their websites. CSS provides more style options than are available in HTML which can be explored.

CSS lets one control most of the properties in sites that one can’t control easily using HTML and to apply them uniformly to a website. For instance, the most common feature of a HTML site is that one cannot add borders in the site unless one uses tables. With CSS, one can add borders in the page anywhere they want to without being forced to use tables. One also has more control on how the border looks like, for instance it can be made bolder, dotted and so on. This in essence shows that CSS allows one to make use of properties where it is actually relevant to do so.

The other advantage of using CSS is that one can be able to separate the design of the page from the content of the page. This can be done by creating .css pages of the appearance of your website and storing them in one folder. Then creating the content and linking the two using HTML tag links. This way it becomes quite easy to manage the site. When anything needs to be changed, either the website appearance or the website content, this can be easily done without interfering with the other. In HTML, the website content and appearance are mixed up together, so one can end up messing with the content or appearance unintentionally.

The other advantage of separating the two is that different people can work on either according to their area of specialization. That means that a writer can work on the web content in a different folder, without necessarily being familiar with HTML tags and attributes. While a web designer can alter the appearance of the site as desired. This separation of site content from style is known as decoupling. Decoupling also makes it easier to make changes in the web pages by avoiding duplication. This is because when you need to make a change in a website, once you change the style sheet, this is effected in the whole site. But with HTML, you have to make the change in each and every page since you have to type the right codes. This helps in saving a lot of time and energy.

Websites made using CSS load faster. Reason being that they carry less code. Since the code is usually defined once in the style sheet. Unlike in HTML which needs a lot of codes per page hence require a longer download time. Again, stylesheets are usually stored in the cache of browsers; this means that download times are faster as they don’t have to be reloaded.

Again, it is quite easy to maintain CSS websites. This is because by changing the global stylesheet, the changes will be effected on the whole website. This creates consistency and uniformity throughout the site.
