7 Specific Topics Every Lawyer Needs To Discuss With Their Website Designer

When creating a website to suit your needs as a lawyer you need to deal with several issues. When you are discussing your website design with your designer, make sure not to allow anything to be on your website that will potentially drive traffic away. Keep this checklist handy when thinking about your future web design. All of these items lay outside of basic website design which should definitely discussed with your website designer as well.

1. Too Many Options

Never create so many options for your visitors that they do nothing. Barry Schwartz, a social scientist, coined the popular phrase “the paradox of choice”. He concluded that the more choices that someone has, the less likely they are to actually make a decision. Choice in an of itself is great, but don’t over do it. To many choices tend to create confusion. The goal of your site is gain clients. This means that there is only one choice, contacting you for their legal needs. All you need to do is give them several methods to make this choice. Simply put, focus attention to what is truly important.

2. Too Much Information

As a lawyer, you should be an expert at determining what potential clients need to know about you and your practice. Do not overload them with pages upon pages of extraneous information. Give them what information they need, and focus their attention to it. This will prevent them from getting bogged down in information that really isn’t relevant to their needs.

3. Useless Information

Useless is anything that your clients do not need to know or doesn’t help advance the basic message of your site. If the information isn’t relevant, do your best to keep it off of your site.

4. Too Many Distractions

Believe it or not, adding extraneous bells and whistles to your site will hurt you in the long run. Anything that distracts your readers from your main message, which should be promoting you and your practice, is a waste of virtual real estate. The last thing you want to do is focus your readers onto an advertisement that pulls them away from your site.

5. Do Not Be Secretive

Make sure that you do not give your readers a reason to question your authenticity. Make sure to always include simple things like your contact information. This will ensure a sense of trust between your readers and your firm. This is will translate into them wanting to use you as their representation. On the other hand, if people do not trust you, they will never ask for you to represent them.

6. Too Many Forms

The point of your website, as a lawyer, is to get contact information about prospective and current clients. Do not make them tell you everything, just get their contact information and then get back to them in person. The more forms they have to fill out the more likely they to just go to a different page.

Make sure to keep these 7 things in mind when you are discussing your website with your designer to ensure that you do not arbitrarily drive prospective clients away from your site.
