10 Steps to A Professional Looking Dental Website

Your website is often the first place that someone will be introduced to your dental practice and will be the basis for your online dental marketing campaign. It represents who you are in the virtual real estate that you build. This being the case, you need to use great design principles to make sure that your site reaches the maximum number of people as possible.

To keep it simple: First impressions are Important

Here are some quick statistics to help you understand what you are dealing with when designing a website.

• You have less than 8 seconds to convince a visitor to stay on your site
• The average visitor will only read 2.5 pages of your site
• If your content is greater than 500 words, then it needs to be highly organized in order to get read.
• If your site is difficult to navigate then visitors will automatically go somewhere else.

Understanding what you must do, here are 10 tips maximize what your website can do for you.

1. Do not use flash only introduction pages

There is no need to waste a page with just a single flash introduction. If they only read 2.5 pages, do you really want one to be an introduction page? If they are not listening to sound, then does the flash do you any good?

2. Simple Navigation

Make sure that you do not give your visitors a reason to leave. If your navigation is difficult and prevents the reader for getting to were they want to go, then they will just leave. They are not going to stick around and try to figure out how your navigation works

3. Tell your users where they are

Make sure visitors always know where they are in your site. This will allow them to easily navigate around your site. If they know where they are, then they know where they need to go.

4. Write simple content

The USA Today is the most widely circulated newspaper available. Did you know that on average, it is written on an 8th grade reading level? This is because people do not want their articles to be taxing to read. To ensure that you do not give push your visitors away, try to write on a 5th grade level just to be safe.

5. No Music

Music at best doesn’t push your visitor away immediately. Most people do not have their speakers on at all times, so adding must only makes the pages load time much longer. Worst case scenario, they hate the music and never come back.

6. Decrease The Total Number of Images

More pictures makes the load time of the page incredibly longer. Use essential images but not extraneous images.

7. Keep your text paragraphs small

The brain naturally processes information from a computer screen differently than reading a hard copy. With this in mind, you need to keep your paragraphs short. You can also use numbering and bullet points when possible to break down what is being read (notice that I used both).

8. Make sure your site is compatible with all web standards

go to www.w3.org and make sure that your site is cross browser compatible. This will make sure that your site can be seen by anyone using any browser.

9. Extra Big or Little Text

Make sure that text is readable. This means that it should not be to big or to little. Make it comfortable to read. A 10 or 12 font is usually standard.

10. Text and Background Color

Some colors are difficult to read. Studies have proven that black text on a white background is the easiest to read. Using a lighter colored background with a darker colored text is always a safe option.

It is your job as the owner of the dental website to ensure that your site looks great. It is important to listen to your website designer, but if they are making your website difficult to use, do not be afraid to put your foot down.
